 AP Studio Art 2D

Current Project:  Visual Scavenger Hunt Artwork

Objectives:  Students will be able to create an artwork inspired by one of the photos they took for the project below.

Your mission is to explore the world in search of interesting and aesthetically pleasing images that address the alphabetical prompts below.  You should attempt to take compositionally sound photographs that work to visually define the prompts from a unique point of view.  Careful attention should be given to all of the Principles of Art/Design and to Creative/Conceptual Thinking.  Be prepared to rationalize how your body of photographs demonstrates your understanding of the Principles of Art/Design (Not every Principle needs to be explored in each photograph, but you must have at least one photograph that demonstrates your understanding of each Principle of Art/Design). Got it? Now go forth and explore!

 Chemistry I

Welcome to Semester 2 of Chemistry!

1/17-18: Today we got new packets for Unit 7. See below for Unit 7 reading and packet. We did pages 68-69 in class, with page 70 for independent practice. We also had an exit quiz over physical and chemical properties. We chose three goals to work on this semester. (See Goal Worksheet).

1/19-1/20: Today we checked page 70 for correctness and had a discussion of what the difference between a physical and chemical change was. Then, we learned about the percent mass equation. We are finishing the packet in class and for IP. The triple Venn Diagram of elements, compounds, and mixtures is also due on Mon/Tues. If you'd like to be in Honors, please pick up an application. Applications are due on Wednesday, 1/25.

First test is on January 25-27!

1/23-24: Today we checked the independent practice packet, filled out the triple Venn together, and started on two station labs. The first station (A) is about physical and chemical changes. The second station is about elements, compounds, and mixtures. The independent practice is the practice test for Unit 7.

1/25-1/27: Today we turned in our physical/chemical changes and Elements,Compounds, and Mixtures Lab. We also turned in Unit 7 packet and triple Venns. We did  a practice quiz and then did the real quiz. No independent practice assignments due.

1/30-2/1: Today we reviewed naming and formula writing for ionic and covalent compounds. Independent practice (which is the rest of the packet, including the practice section) is due on Wed/Thurs, and is attached to the ionic and covalent bonding packet. We started the mole and molar mass as well. See below for attachments.

 English 10

Hello!  Wecome to our English 10 Whiteboard for both PreAP English 10 and English 10 classes.

Most of the information English PreAP will be posted on our classroom website, but access is restricted to parents and students.  If you would like access to the site, please email me at kcarver@herronhighschoool.org.  I will need the student's full name (and yours if you are a parent) along with an email address.  You will then receive an invitation via that email.  Parents have access to the classroom calendar and assignments, and students can submit assignments electronically and post questions to the instructor and their fellow classmates.  Please let me know if you have any questions about the site.

All students and parents are allowed access to our English 10 classroom website, and may visit the site without a password at www.myhaikuclass.com/kcarver/english10.

I am looking forward to an exciting and rewarding year.  If you have any questions or need to contact me, please do so by emailing me at Herron.  I will try my best to respond to any inquiries as soon as I am able.

Thank you and welcome to the Ancient world of the Greeks and Romans and their literature.  It's going to be a challenging (but fascinating) ride.

 Painting

Current Project:  What is Beauty?

Project Objectives:

1.      Create a list of at least 20 objects that could be considered “junk”.

2.      Find, select, and bring in three small hand-held objects that would generally be considered as “junk” in our culture.  No dog waste, rotten food, or infectious waste.  There is a difference between “junk” and garbage.  If you have trouble discerning between the two, please ask me to clarify before you begin your search.

3.      Create preparatory sketches of the object in a dry medium.  This will help you to resolve any technical issues that might otherwise prevent you from creating a realistic depiction of the object.  In other words, you need to know how to draw it before you can paint it.

4.      Create 3 paintings of the same object with the attempt to make them as “beautiful” as possible. The first must be done using a monochromatic palette.  The second must be done using an approved color scheme (analogous, complementary, warm vs. cool, etc).  The final painting must be done using a full color palette.  At this point, you may choose to exaggerate the colors found in the object.

5.      You may choose to use the same composition or alter compositions as the paintings progress.

6.      All paintings must be done on the same size surface (9x12” min.) to help create a consistent comparison.

7.      All paintings must include the same object.  Please be careful when selecting an object.  It must hold your interest for at least three or four weeks while we paint it.  If you choose not to select and bring in an object one will be provided for you.  At this point, you will have no choice over which object to paint.  I am too busy to spend my days scouring the planet looking for something you may want to paint.  Bring something in – or take what you get.

Point Breakdown:

Written List of 20 “junk” items.  Three appropriate items of “junk” brought in on time – 25 pts

Exploratory sketches that confidently render form – 50 pts

9 x 12” Monochromatic painting – 50 pts

9 x 12 Color scheme painting – 75 pts

9 x 12” Full palette painting – 100 pts

300 Total points
